Over the past few weeks the Year 5s have been making paper. They have been doing this because they have been inspired by an organization called Green Pop. Green Pop plants trees in places that are underprivileged, for example in Zambia. They planted 5000 trees there and it happens to have the 2nd highest deforestation rate in the world!
One of Green Pop’s staff members, (we all should remember her) Michele Kingwell came in and told the Year 5s all about Green Pop and how it started. The year 5s were so fascinated by these facts that they decided they would plant 30 trees. It all added up to be quite a large bill since one tree was one hundred rand, so thirty trees would be three thousand rand! They were not just going to ask their parents to give them 100 rand each (there are thirty people in the whole year) so they decided they would be real business people and start a sale. It had to be eco-friendly since they were doing this for trees, so they came up with the idea of recycling paper to make new (more beautiful) paper.
If you want to help save the environment too, then here are the ingredients and directions:
Ingredients:
- 5 cups ( tea cups) of water
- 5 sheets of paper
- Food colouring (any colour)
- (not ingredients) A bucket , a blender, a frame and mesh (or old mosquito net).
Method:
First you take the five sheets of paper and tear them up into the smallest pieces possible which you then put into the bucket. Next, pour the five cups of water in too and mix thoroughly for about 10 minutes just to get the colour out and to make the paper softer and easier to blend. When the paper has lost some of its colour and doesn't feel crisp anymore you pour this into the blender and blend for 2-3 minutes or until this mixture turns into a pulp. When this has happened, pour it into a plastic bowl (preferably not a precious one) and add your choice of food colouring. Mix well. You can leave the pulp for a little bit while you make the frame:
Next, take an old frame and staple the right amount of mesh to fit onto it. Make sure it is tight or your paper will not be straight and will be hard to peel off.
When you have done this, pour the mixture onto the frame and put into the sun to dry. It will take about 24 but trust me, it is worth it. I suggest you do this in the summer for our experience was in the rainy weather and we had some delays because of it.
Hope it turns out wonderfully like it did for us!
